It took 60 years, but the Atlantic Coast Conference finally won a baseball national title again. Virginia completed its improbable run to the championship with a 4-2 victory over defending champ Vanderbilt on Wednesday night, making it the first ACC team since Wake Forest in 1955 to reach the top of college baseball. Only the Pac-12 and Southeastern Conference have sent more teams to the College World Series.

Connor Jones gave Virginia the kind of start that would have been good enough to win most nights. Jones held the Commodores scoreless through five innings, but his teammates couldn't solve Fulmer and Virginia lost 5-1 Monday night in the first game of the College World Series finals. The Cavaliers (42-24), in the finals for the second straight year against Vanderbilt (51-19), must win Tuesday to force a deciding third game Wednesday.

Vanderbilt's Rhett Wiseman is happy to be back in the College World Series finals - perhaps more for teammates who weren't on the roster last year than for himself. Upon returning to the clubhouse after Friday's 7-1 win over TCU, he said, he relished the reaction of those players who'll experience the finals for the first time Monday when the best-of-three series starts against Virginia. ''Especially the guys that were on the team that were redshirted, that's where I get even kind of choked up talking about it, just for them to be able to get back here after hearing about what it was like last year,'' Wiseman said.

Six weeks ago, it looked as though Virginia might not even qualify for its conference tournament, let alone the NCAA Tournament. ''This team was a crazy ride this year,'' said coach Brian O'Connor, who was born in Omaha. ''Certainly, we had a lot that went against us through the year, but this team found a way and got into the NCAA Tournament.

Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin, like everyone else not in the Virginia dugout, was surprised when the Cavaliers sent Adam Haseley to the mound for Game 2 of the College World Series finals. Haseley and Josh Sborz combined on a 3-0 shutout that forced a winner-take-all Game 3 on Wednesday night. Haseley was a bit of a mystery to Corbin and his assistants.

Fulmer was sensational again Monday night while limiting Virginia to two hits over 7 2/3 shutout innings in the Commodores' 5-1 victory in the opener of the College World Series finals. Vanderbilt (51-19) can repeat as national champion with one more win. The Commodores will send Phil Pfeifer (6-4) to the mound Tuesday night.

Florida's Harrison Bader sat at the podium and choked up as reality hit him. ''No crying in baseball,'' he said Saturday night, a few minutes after the Gators' season ended with a 5-4 loss to Virginia at the College World Series. Florida goes home.
