Tony Stewart spent a rare week off traveling across Ohio as the hands-on owner of a sprint car series. Stewart returned to his day job refreshed and ready to get back to work with his NASCAR team. It took just one practice session at Sonoma Raceway for Stewart's moment of Zen to end with a resounding thud.

AJ Allmendinger, developing as the top driver on road courses, won the pole for Sunday's race at winding Sonoma Raceway. Allmendinger earned the top starting spot during Saturday's knockout qualifying with a lap 96.310 mph around the 10-turn, 1.99-mile course. It's the first pole for JTG Daugherty Racing, which earned its first berth in NASCAR's championship race last year when Allmendinger won on the Watkins Glen road course.

After two practice sessions at Sonoma Raceway, Kyle Busch spent an evening icing his surgically repaired left foot. Just five races after returning from a broken right leg and shattered left foot, Busch made his way to victory lane to continue what already has been an impressive comeback. Cracking the top 30 in points to earn a berth in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., NASCAR's most popular driver, called the Confederate flag ''offensive to an entire race'' Friday while voicing his support for it being removed from the grounds of the South Carolina Statehouse. NASCAR this week said it backs South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley's call to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds, and noted that it bars the flag symbol in any official NASCAR capacity. Earnhardt backed NASCAR's position when asked about the issue before practice at Sonoma Raceway.

Calling the Confederate flag an ''insensitive symbol'' he personally finds offensive, NASCAR chairman Brian France said the sport will be aggressive in disassociating the symbol from its events. ''We want to go as far as we can to eliminate the presence of that flag,'' France told The Associated Press on Saturday. Earlier this week, NASCAR said it backed South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley's call to remove the Confederate flag from state capitol grounds, and noted that it bars the flag symbol in any official NASCAR capacity.

AJ Allmendinger knows the stakes on Sunday: Win on the road course at Sonoma Raceway and he earns a spot in NASCAR's championship race. The year-old qualifying format almost guarantees a race winner a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field, which Allmendinger capitalized last season. Allmendinger, one of the top road racers in NASCAR, is hoping for the same outcome this year.

NASCAR's Erik Jones breaks through with historic weekend (The Associated Press):

All year long, Erik Jones was the kid who couldn't finish a NASCAR Trucks race. The 19-year-old Jones shed that label with a brilliant run at Iowa Speedway and then made history 24 hours later by becoming the first driver to sweep Camping World Trucks and Xfinity races on different tracks in the same weekend. Jones drove the Kyle Busch Motorsports No. 4 truck to victory on Iowa's 0.875-mile short track on Friday.
