Why the Pig is the Final Sign of the Zodiac: A Tale of Kindness and Luck
In Khmer culture, each year is represented by one of twelve animals, and the cycle ends with the humble Year of the Pig (Chnam Koar).
Have you ever wondered how the slow-moving, gentle pig managed to
secure a spot among the prestigious twelve zodiac signs? The legend is a
beautiful reminder that speed isn't everything.
In my latest video, I dive deep into one of these fascinating legends. Watch the full animation/story below!
The Great Race of the Animals
According
to ancient folklore, the Buddha (or the Jade Emperor in other
variations) invited all the animals in the world to participate in a
great race. The first twelve animals to cross a vast, rushing river
would be honored as the guardians of the years.
Many
animals used their strength, speed, or wit. The Tiger swam with power,
the Dragon flew through the clouds, and the Rabbit hopped across stones.
However, the Pig was nowhere to be seen for a long time.
Why the Pig was Last
Just
as the Buddha was about to close the selection, a soft "oink" was
heard. The Pig finally emerged from the water, dripping wet but wearing a
wide, happy smile.
When
asked why it took so long, the Pig honestly replied that it had gotten
hungry in the middle of the race. It stopped to eat a delicious meal
and, feeling quite full, accidentally fell into a deep sleep. Upon
waking up, the
Pig
didn't give up; it continued its journey and reached the finish line just in time to take the 12th and final spot. The Meaning of Chnam Koar
Because of this story, people born in the Year of the Pig are believed to possess wonderful traits:
- Honesty & Sincerity: They are straightforward and loyal.
- Easy-going Nature: Like the Pig in the race, they know how to enjoy life and don't let stress overcome them.
- Good Fortune: The Pig is a symbol of wealth, abundance, and a "full life" (plenty of food and rest).
Conclusion
The
Year of the Pig teaches us that even if we are not the fastest or the
strongest, persistence and a good heart will always lead us to our
destination. It is a year of celebration, kindness, and prosperity for
everyone!
